Harlem has played a major role throughout New York's history until it became the main hub of African American culture. Harlem is now transforming into a vibrant and attractive neighborhood, despite being considered a high crime ghetto just a few years ago.

The renewal of African-American culture

Even though the country emerged from the economic crisis after WWII, the Harlem neighborhood did not. He then isolated himself from the rest of Manhattan, and acquired a bad reputation: Harlem became a ghetto. The urban landscape gradually deteriorated, houses fell into disrepair, buildings and businesses were abandoned, several areas remaining fallow.

The 1970s were one of the worst periods in Harlem history. Huge numbers of people fleeing poverty left the neighborhood in search of a safer place, better schools and housing.

Since the end of the twentieth century, Harlem has undergone significant changes, both in its social structure, in its living conditions but also in its urban landscape. These upheavals are part of Manhattan's recent revitalisation.

A district rich in culture

After having had a history focused on the poverty of the district, Harlem knew how to develop and improve its infrastructures. The district became one of the centers of the struggle for equal civil rights, as Harlem has long been and remains today a place of concentration of African Americans.

Harlem became the meeting place for the African-American elites of New York, which at that time reached the rank of world city of culture.

Tourism

A decade ago, Harlem was an infrequent neighborhood, day and night. However, since the district's second Renaissance, things have changed. Indeed, Harlem is today an important tourist spot in Manhattan. The diversity of its buildings and places of entertainment have marked the history of the city. Harlem seeks to attract new visitors by showcasing its heritage like jazz clubs. Harlem is now part of the routes taken by tourist coaches.
